Kirklees Poetry Society
The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available. Kirklees Poetry Society was founded in 1981. Its aim was to promote and encourage poetry and to make it accessible and attractive to people. It held regular monthly sessions in Huddersfield Library for readings of poetry, lectures and discussions.
The Society suspended activities indefinately in 1989 because of lack of financial support, Kirklees Leisure Services had withdrawn their grant to the Society. There had also been a struggle to maintain a regular attendance at meetings for some time. The Society faced competition from the English Society which had been formed at Huddersfield Polytechnic during the 1980's and from the Poetry Business in Byram Arcade which ran poetry workshops and seminars as well as publishing poems.
Records relating to the Society can be found at WYAS Kirklees, collection reference KC800.
