University of the Third Age, Huddersfield Branch
The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available. The University of the Third Age [U3A] began in France in 1972. The term 'university' was used loosely to mean a society of people sharing similar aims, for example: to keep themselves active and fulfilled during retirement years. In England the first U3A Group was formed in Cambridge in 1982. The only qualification required was to be over 50 as no academic qualifications were necessary.
The Huddersfield Branch was founded in 1984 by Edith Bentley, who remained its organising secretary until 1993. The Group organises daytime activities for the benefit of all members, which consists of a programme of classes or tutorial groups on a wide range of subjects to suit the interest of members. The tutor's are all members of the Group and they contribute their special skills, knowledge, and experience for the benefit of members without payment. The Group holds an annual general meeting when the honorary officers are elected.
The University of the Third Age, Huddersfield and District Group is a registered charity and is affiliated to the Thrid Age Trust.
Records relating to the Huddersfield Branch are held by WYAS Kirklees, collection reference KC726
